LECTURE SERIES: Teenagers Scientific Diving from Reefs to Shipwrecks

In July, our monthly lecture series at the Great Lakes Maritime Heritage Center will feature the SCUBAnauts and is entitled, "Teenagers Scientific Diving from Reefs to Shipwrecks."

This group of Florida and Georgia teenagers are working with Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary to document shipwrecks and learn about this special ecosystem - very different from the warm coral reefs they are accustomed to!

SCUBAnauts International's mission is to educate teens in the marine sciences, enabling them to make a positive impact on the environment and empowering them to become tomorrow’s leaders. They work hard all year to train as Scientific Divers and contribute to impactful marine research. Past projects range from coral restoration to seagrass monitoring to dive physiology studies.

In this lecture, the five "Nauts" visiting Thunder Bay will share their experiences helping to document shipwrecks, participate in marine debris surveys, and analyze water quality as part of the Sanctuary’s broader freshwater acidification study. These students have been in the program for several years and have spent the last three months preparing to dive in cold water. Come hear what they have accomplished so far and what they hope to accomplish this week!

As always, our lecture series is free and open to all!
Doors to the Great Lakes Maritime Heritage Center will open at 5:30pm and the lecture will begin at 6pm.
