Wright Rocks!: Exploring Nature's Architecture

This special tour is like no other! Get down to the beachfront that inspired Frank Lloyd Wright and that the Martin family so enjoyed on Wright Rocks! Exploring Nature’s Architecture.

Designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, Graycliff sits high on the bluff above Lake Erie, one with the site and nature. Join Graycliff and Penn Dixie for a special geological tour of the site and discover the history of the land, the architecture, Wright's material choice, and more to show why Wright “rocks”! In this special edition of our Wright Rocks Tour this year, guests will be able to walk down to the water’s edge and visit the base of the cliff from which Graycliff is named firsthand!

The experience will include hunting for rocks and fossils that have fallen from the shale (you are welcome to pick up, and take a rock or two home) and included with your admission is a pass to visit and dig at Penn Dixie during the 2025 season. There, you'll be able to dig, find, and keep fossils you discover on the 54 acres of Penn Dixie Fossil Park & Nature Reserve (approximately 18 min from Graycliff by car).

This two and a half hour special thematic tour of Graycliff is co-led by a Graycliff docent trained in the architecture of our site and a Penn Dixie staff member with expertise in the site’s geological significance.

Graycliff and Penn Dixie Members save 10% on their ticket purchase! Graycliff Members, please log into your account to receive your discount. Penn Dixie Members, please refer to your membership coordinator to receive your promo code to book with your discount.

Please note that this tour includes the grounds, portions of the first floor of the main house, and a trip down to the private rock beach below the cliff (an experience not available on any other tour experience). This experience includes much uneven terrain and participants will be asked to sign a waiver. Proper footwear is required, with hiking boots strongly recommended. Should the weather not cooperate, the tour will be rescheduled (as we will not be able to go down safely to the beach in the rain). Only guests 10 and up will be admitted at this time, with a paid adult. Students will be asked to provide a valid student ID to receive the student rate.

Graycliff's new Visitor Center is under construction through March 2026. During construction, guest parking will be limited and our welcome area temporarily modified. The historic Wright-designed main house remains fully accessible and open for tours.

Due to strict capacity limitations, we are currently offering tours by reservation only. Please book your visit in advance to ensure your visit. Walk-in visits cannot be accommodated at this time.
