Over four weeks, you’ll learn fundamental techniques like the slab method, pinch pots, and coiling, each essential for hand-built ceramics. By the end, you’ll have a collection of handmade pieces and the skills to keep creating on your own.
Course Outline: Each 90-minute session will focus on a specific technique, with the final week as a free session to put your new skills to the test!
6.30pm - 8.30pm
Week 1: Wednesday 13 August – Slab Building - Crafting Functional Forms
Start with the basics of the slab method, a versatile technique that uses flat clay sheets to construct various shapes.
You’ll learn:
How to prepare clay and roll out even slabs.
Techniques for cutting, shaping, and joining slabs without cracks or warping.
Creating simple projects like a tray, small plate, or planter.
By the end of this session, you’ll complete your first functional form—perfect for getting a feel for working with clay!
Week 2: Wednesday 20 August - Pinch Pot Technique – Embracing Organic Shapes
In Week 2, we’ll dive into pinch potting, a technique ideal for forming small, round vessels.
You’ll learn:
How to form a pinch pot by hand and refine its shape.
Techniques for even walls and a smooth finish.
Decorative ideas to personalise your piece.
For your project, you’ll create a set of small pinch pots—ideal for use as bowls, cups, or candle holders.
Week 3: Wednesday 27 August - Coiling – Building Taller, Structured Pieces
The coiling technique is fantastic for adding height and structure to pottery.
You’ll explore:
How to roll even coils and stack them to build up walls.
Methods for blending and smoothing coils for a seamless look.
Creating forms like a vase or tall cup.
Your Week 3 project will be a coiled vessel, perfect for holding flowers or utensils, showcasing the height and structure of this technique.
Week 4: Wednesday 3 September - Freestyle Project – Bringing It All Together
In our final week, you’ll put your skills to the test with a project of your choice! Use any technique (or a combination of them) to create a unique piece with guidance available as needed. This is a great opportunity to experiment, make something ambitious, or refine one of the methods you enjoyed most.
