Caesura: A World Premiere Production
Written and directed by Tim Backes
CAESURA: A break or interruption in a conversation, a line of verse, or a song. Usually a caesura means total silence, but not for long. After the death of her father, with whom she was on uneven terms, Emma Hitchens stays away from her midwestern home town for more than two years. But now she’s reluctantly back, as the school where he became a legendary choral director is looking to dedicate a new arts wing in his name. The return home forces her to confront the complexities and challenges of her relationships with her mother and brother. All the while, she is haunted by the specter of her father in a series of recurring nightmares that emphasize the weight her unexplored grief has had on her during this interruption in her life.
AUDITIONS - Saturday, August 2nd, timeslots 9am - 1pm
Location: 5109 N 125th St, Butler
Please prepare a contemporary monologue of one to two minutes in length. Actors interested in the part of Emma should prepare the first several lines of Schubert’s “Ave Maria” (Latin) a capella.
Rehearsals take place at the same location as auditions. Rehearsals will begin September 15th.
Tech: October 6th - 9th
Performances: October 10th - 19th
Tech and performances take place at Resurrection Lutheran Church in New Berlin.
ROLES:
Auditions are open to actors of all races, body types, genders, and abilities unless specifically stated. All actors will receive a $150 stipend.
EMMA HITCHENS, a woman not in any hurry to revisit life in her hometown. Has not allowed herself to process the complex emotions associated with the death of her father two years prior. Late 20s to late 30s. Actor must be a strong classical singer.
SAM PEARSON, Emma’s childhood best friend. Somewhat irreverent, but also a critical stabilizing force for Emma, especially as she returns home. Late 20s to late 30s.
JAN HITCHENS, Emma’s mother who is still adjusting to life without her husband, but now, two years on, is doing well. Craves to see her family reunited and getting along. 50s/60s.
AARON HITCHENS, Emma’s younger brother, who is a bit of a failure to launch. Lives at home, plays video games, gets coddled a bit by Jan, but also was there for her in some difficult moments. Mid 20s to early 30s.
WILL, Emma’s partner who is accompanying her on her trip home. Adaptable and can get along with just about anyone. A supportive and kind partner. Late 20s to late 30s.
THE CONDUCTOR, a recurring specter haunting Emma’s dreams, a symbol of her unresolved grief. 50s/60s.
