MATERIAL TESTIMONIES - GROUP EXHIBITION

That a living organism must die is an obvious truth. Yet buildings, often assumed to have “life”, are frequently considered obsolete long before they have reached their full potential life span. The exhibition “Material Testimonies” illustrates the destructive cycles of redevelopment through artefacts collected from two buildings: one pre and one post demolition. The artefacts are explored as producers and containers of knowledge, and through their observation we ask: How can we learn from decaying, breaking, failing buildings? What can the artefacts tell us about the birth, life and ultimately death of a building? Which kind of stories of long standing communities, built history and labour, are lost when we demolish?
