This year we celebrate the band’s 60th anniversary, as well as recognize the 30th anniversary since frontman Jerry Garcia’s death and the first Meet-Up since bassist Phil Lesh passed.
The Grateful Dead Movie is an immersive concert film that captures The Grateful Dead’s five-night run at San Francisco’s Winterland Ballroom in October 1974 – their farewell tour before a temporary hiatus. Blending electrifying live performances with animation, candid backstage footage, and interviews, the film is a cultural time capsule of the Deadhead experience. This beloved film is a fan favorite and will be screened as part of our continued Grateful Dead ‘Meet-Up at the Movies’ Regular Offering. It is the 12th of the regular Deadhead Meet-Ups in cinemas.
Jerry Garcia, co-founder and face of the band who died in 1995, co-directed the film. Additional content comes in the form of a big screen exclusive theatrical premiere of “China Cat Sunflower>I Know You Rider” – a bonus live performance from the October ‘74 Winterland shows not included in the official film release.
The Grateful Dead are an iconic American rock band, who formed in 1965 in Palo Alto, California. They are known for their devoted fanbase – their die-hard followers, known as Deadheads, followed them on tour and created a unique subculture centered around live music and community.
