FRANKENHOOKER @ Alamo Drafthouse

Wanna date? After blessing the world with phallic monster masterpieces BASKET CASE and BRAIN DAMAGE, genre maestro Frank Henenlotter turned his queer eye toward Penthouse model Patty Mullen and a weird guy from New Jersey to create another triumph. This purple-haired, juiced-up creation would be called FRANKENHOOKER, and cinema was never the same.
Unleashed in 1990 and immediately vaulted to cult status, our “terrifying tale of sluts and bolts” follows junior mad scientist Jeffrey Franken’s (James Lorinz) quest to reanimate his salad-tossed girlfriend (Mullen, in an Oscar-worthy dual role) with parts sourced from the seedier corners of 42nd Street. Both completely hysterical and smarter than it seems, FRANKENHOOKER is a camp cartoon opus on the subject of feeling like your womanhood has been awkwardly stitched together in a simulacrum of other, cooler women. It’s also about finding a bra that fits, the difficulty of walking in heels, and the fear that all your lovers might someday violently explode. In the words of Bill Murray, “If you only see one movie this year, it should be FRANKENHOOKER.” (Morgan Hyde)
