Step into the world of traditional Islamic art in this unique cultural workshop at the Portico Library with Creative Society Manchester

We’ll begin with a short introductory talk by Dr Debbie Challis, sharing the fascinating stories of two British female artists and their encounters with women in the Ottoman Empire — a rare insight into art, travel, and cross-cultural exchange. One of these women, Gertrude Jekyll, described how the women used henna for body art and both were fascinated by their gorgeous embroidery.
Then it’s time to get creative. You’ll learn and practice the beautiful techniques of henna design before painting your own candle using delicate Turkish floral motifs in a traditional Islamic style.
