《島聲漫溯:陳達與第一唱片 tracing island folkscapes: chen da and first records》
For the June edition of 「漫舞運動 SLOW DANCE MOVEMENT」, we journey into the sonic legacy of Chen Da — the moon guitar troubadour of Hengchun, whose voice carried the wind and wounds of Taiwan’s southern coast. This month’s book club and vinyl listening session features rare pressings from First Records’ seminal Folkways of Taiwan compilations, curated under the guidance of composer and ethnomusicologist Hsu Tsang-Houei (許常惠). These recordings — spanning from field songs to ritual chants — form a deep acoustic archive of Taiwan’s mid-20th century folk soundscape.
Through Chen Da’s raw, salt-rusted ballads and Hsu’s visionary efforts to preserve vanishing traditions, we invite you to step into a soundscape of memory, migration, and resistance. Come slow dance with us in the dust and breath of time!
