Join us this 24th to 27th October for a West African musical immersion at our annual NZ Drum Dance Camp.
Set amidst 38 acres of native bushland just a short drive from Wellington, this weekend is a celebration of unity, rhythm, and the soul-stirring power of African drum and dance, curated for the NZ African drumming community.
We are excited to announce that Epizo Bangoura will be back to join us again in 2025!
Epizo Bangoura is a celebrated master musician from Guinea, West Africa, known for his extraordinary versatility on the Kora (African harp), Balafon (African tuned percussion), and Djembe/Duns.
Epizo will be joined by Ghanaian Master Drummer Yaw Asumadu and Simon Fraser, Director of African Drumming.
Camp Highlights:
βͺ Djembe and Dunun Workshops: Suitable for all skill levels, from enthusiastic beginners to advanced drummers, guided by our awesome team of teachers.
βͺ Traditional Dance: with the effervescent Epizo Bangoura.
βͺ Group Jams and Musical Sessions: Strengthen communal bonds through captivating group jams and impromptu musical sessions.
βͺ Tranquil Setting: Enjoy the native bushland environ - build mind, body and spirit whilst enhancing our weekend of music and togetherness.
βͺ Catering β Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner included on Saturday and Sunday, as well as breakfast Monday. Please bring a shared (pre-prepared) plate for Friday evening kai.

Epizo Bangoura: A master of the djembe and traditional dance, Epizo brings profound knowledge and vibrant energy, embodying the essence of West African music and dance.
Yaw Asumadu: A Master Drummer from Ghana, Yaw has performed globally and taught African drumming for 25 years, collaborating with legendary artists.
Simon Fraser: Founder of African Drumming, Simon has been performing, recording, and teaching since the 1990βs. Simon is a renowned camp and tour curator and is excited to be back in NZ!

βͺ Single Day & night $220 (includes 3 meals and full day tuition)

βͺ Friday, 24th October: Arrive from 4pm - A warm welcome sets the stage for a weekend filled with rhythm and learning.
Bring a share plate for dinner.
βͺ Saturday, 25th October: Engage in enriching drum and dance workshops. Participants will be grouped into their appropriate levels.
βͺ Sunday, 26th October: Continue your musical journey with drum and dance sessions, leading to a group performance that encapsulates the weekendβs shared experiences.
βͺ Monday, 27th October: Morning All in Drum & Dance ceremony, then it's time to hit the road.

βͺ Getting Ready: Bring your drum (if available), snacks for the weekend, dance-appropriate shoes, sleeping gear (pillowcase & sheet, sleeping bag/ doona), warm clothes, and an eager spirit.
βͺ Beginners are warmly welcomed β our camp is a nurturing space for newcomers to discover the joy of African drumming and dance, bolstered by a supportive community.
