“A Handful of Salt” movie screening

A document of the Agehama-style salt fields (a style of sun-drying sea water that is scattered on a cleared beach) in Okunoto, which were devastated by a recent earthquake. The film reveals a way of life in harmony with nature and leads us to wonder about the beginnings of human activity.

Plot:
The city of Suzu in Ishikawa Prefecture was severely damaged by the Noto Peninsula earthquake of 2024. The Agehama salt produced in this area uses traditional techniques of gathering seawater, scattering them on a cleared beach, sun-drying them in the open air, and then boiling them in a flat pot for a full day and night. The passion of the craftspeople who devote themselves to salt production and their way of life in harmony with nature makes us wonder about the beginnings of human activity.

あらすじ
2024年に発生した能登半島地震で甚大な被害を受けた石川県珠洲市。この奥能登と呼ばれる地で作り続けられる「揚げ浜塩」は、海水を汲み上げ、整地した砂浜に撒き、天日と風の力で乾燥させた後、平釜で一昼夜焚き上げる。〝手塩にかける〟の語源とも言われる製法とその歴史に驚かされる。塩作りに懸ける職人たちの想いと、〝自然と共にある暮らしぶり〟が「人間の原点」を問いかける。
