Bird Banding Demo

See conservation science in action with our Bird Banding Demos!

Bird banding involves catching birds in mist nets, taking measurements on them, determining their age and sex, putting an aluminum band on their leg with a unique number sequence, and then releasing the bird back into their habitat. All of the data that is gathered is uploaded to the Bird Banding Lab. From this collected data we can monitor bird populations, migration patterns, life expectancies, and even nest success rates. With an estimated 75% of North American bird species now in decline, this population monitoring is now more important than ever.

You can learn all about bird banding, its importance, and even help release some of the birds at our demos. Demos are every Friday at the pavilion next to our gift shop from 8am to 10am starting Friday June 6th through July 25th (no demo on July 4th). Banding demos are free with our regular admission price of $12/car or $20/bus
