About Bernie:
Also known to many as "Old Man River"- Bernie, along with the support and encouragement of like-minded community leaders and close friends, such as renowned architect Alex Camayd, Ray Angeli and Bill Scranton, co-founded the Lackawanna River Corridor Association (later embracing the entire watershed by changing "Corridor" to "Conservation") and the Lackawanna Valley Conservancy. He served as Executive Director from 1991 through 2023.
Through his work and the work of many dedicated volunteers, he helped transform the Lackawanna River into the pristine, Class A Trout fishery it is today. You can appreciate its beauty and serenity along Sweeney's Beach off of Poplar Street. There his legacy will live on for generations to come.
Bernie is the 2014 recipient the Thomas P. Shelburne Leadership Award as well as Man of the Year Award by the Ancient Order of Hibernians. In 2016, he was recognized among the"150 People who made Scranton Great" by the Scranton Times Tribune during Scranton's "Sesquicentennial" celebration.
Bernie recently stepped back from his longtime role as Executive Director and the torch was passed to Tara Jones. He is still serving as a part-time consultant/Senior Project Manager when he's not riding his bicycle!
