Join Annabel McGowan, Gordon Darling Graduate Intern, Australian Prints, for a closer look at Australian printmakers working during the 1930s including Dorrit Black (1891–1951), Paul Haefliger (1914–1982) and Muriel Shaw (1911–1990).
In this talk, Annabel will show how these Australian artists represented coastlines through bold modernist relief prints inspired by the British avant-garde and Japanese ukiyo-e prints. Annabel will highlight the central role of women printmakers in the development of modernism in Australia in the 1930s, with a focus on Muriel Shaw’s woodblock print Ashore (Taylor's Bay, near Mona Vale NSW) 1936.
Friday Art Talks is a free weekly program. Hear from artists, curators and experts on the works in our collection and exhibition program. In August the Friday Art Talks program is focused on printmaking.
