The Spinning Goat Productions' documentary film Improvising the Divine: The Music of Tom Moran will screen for one night only in Pittsburgh on Thursday, August 14. The event is presented by Trafford Estate.
Produced and directed by Chris Mason (Spinning Goat Productions) and premiered in 2018, Improvising the Divine details the life and creative trajectory of Pittsburgh musician and instrument-builder Tom Moran. From rock n’ roll to nascent punk, through outlaw bluegrass to Middle Eastern classicism, Tom has quite literally lent his hands in the service of shaping cultural perspectives through the Eastern U.S. and beyond. In Improvising the Divine’s third act, Tom is interviewed by J. Trafford (Suavity's Mouthpiece, Sommelier, Nowhere Wolves).
The film will be screened at the Irma Freeman Center for Imagination in Pittsburgh, PA on Thursday, August 14. The film’s screening will be preceded by special performances from folk/singer-songwriters Cacklin' Racket and Rats of Reason.
Additionally, the Irma Freeman Center will highlight a selection of recent artwork by Tom Moran during the event.
The August 14 Pittsburgh screening of Improvising the Divine follows the film’s July 2025 feature as an official selection of A Night for the Gem Film Festival in Greensburg - marking the film’s first return to screen in seven years.
