A WORLD PREMIERE SEAGULL

“Something different… something dreamlike. Something true.”
Chekhov’s tragi-comedy, with its pantheon of longing lovers, experienced on the banks of a pond straight out of Tolstoy’s Russian dachas (and under the glittering windows of the Mellon Center façade) is a story of spiraling unrequited love. At its center is aspiring playwright Constantine, who falls for the radiant young actress Nina.

Adapted and directed by Joanie Schultz, Quantum looks at Seagull through an evolving romantic lens and brings new resonance to its timeless themes, while honoring Chekhov’s brilliant understanding of frustrated desire. Schultz’s emotional interpretation offers insight into the strong but strained bond between a mother and a daughter, reveals hidden truths about marginalized figures, and gives contemporary new energy to a masterwork about love and longing. Staged outdoors at Chatham University, a dreamy place to contemplate the dreams we chase and the way they reveal who we are.
