Join Terehia Walker for a Guest-Curator Kōrero in support of our current exhibition Ruaruawhetū – Weaving Design Celebrating the Stars.
'Kia ora koutou, As we celebrate Matariki, I am reminded of the intricate connections between threads, just like the stars in our cluster. Weaving is more than just a craft; it’s a way of storytelling, of passing down traditions and histories.
Our ancestors wove more than just garments; they wove narratives, identities and whakapapa. This Matariki, let's honour the art of weaving and the stories it holds. Let's weave new tales, strengthen old bonds and celebrate the beauty of our heritage.
‘Nau Mai, Haere mai ka whiria te taura tangata - Welcome and let's weave together the strands of humanity.'
Terehia is passionate about Māori infused style of mahi toi. She is a storyteller who comes from a long line of storytellers, all from iwis who from within their mahi toi (art) tell purakau (stories). She has a passion for recycling and for natural resources, both which can be used in everyday practice, and sourced from the whenua (land). Mahi toi (art) is a form of Rongoa (Māori medicines).
This event is FREE, but please RSVP using the Humanitix link below:
