Cultivating Mindful Self-Awareness

Fridays, April 11 – May 16, 5:00 – 6:00 PM
"I am able to control only that which I am aware of. That which I am unaware of controls me. Awareness empowers me."
- John Whitmore
Mindful Self-Awareness, often simply called Mindfulness, is the intentional practice of purposefully paying attention, without self- defeating judgement, to our experiences in the present moment. We cultivate this capacity through the practice of meditation. Verified benefits of a regular mindfulness meditation practice include:
• Enhanced emotional regulation
• More effective responses to stress
• Lower anxiety or depression levels
• Better sleep
• Increases in the gray matter density of the brain
Developing a regular practice of mindful meditation can help you refocus and recharge your everyday life.
While the definition of mindfulness is simple to understand, it is not always easy to achieve on a regular basis. Instead of enjoying peace and a steady state of mind, we can find ourselves swimming in disarray with a sense of overwhelm – with more confusion than answers – we may contemplate things such as:
• How do we remain mindful amidst the challenges and distractions of our lives?
• How can we relate to the suffering of our world with more understanding and compassion?
This class was created with these questions in mind!
With the proper intention and attention, through the practice of sitting, standing and walking meditation, we will train ourselves to realize a greater degree of steadiness of mind, heart and action in life.
Over the course of six weeks, participants will be taught a systematic approach to mindfulness in the Insight meditation tradition.
Each weekly 60-minute class will include:
> A short teaching to introduce a concept
> A 20–30-minute practice, combining guided and silent seated, standing, or walking meditation
> Time for sharing, discussion and questions.
Beginners and experienced meditators are welcome. A simultaneous Zoom link will be set up for those who are unable to join in person or in the event of inclement weather.
Registration & Cost
- Entire 6-Week Series: $102.00
- Single Class: $20.00
