In The Company of Trees is a black-and-white photographic series that treats trees not as background, but as subject—each one a unique presence captured in quiet reverence. These portraits invite the viewer to meet trees as individuals: twisted, graceful, weathered, reaching, rooted. Stripped of color, we are offered a different light, one that reveals the silent strength and sculptural form of these living monuments. Through this series, the familiar becomes unfamiliar—and worthy of closer attention.
Artist Abby Star has been taking photographs since she first picked up a film camera in high school. Her artistic practice is deeply rooted in a connection to nature. The natural world serves not only as inspiration but also as a space for exploration and experimentation. Through her work, she seeks to investigate the textures, forms, and rhythms found in the environment, capturing its beauty and intricacy through a creative lens. She is drawn to photography because it allows us to capture moments in our lives, but it also allows us to manipulate, create, and imagine.
