Forest walk & beach cleanup at Pulau Ubin

Let’s do a short forest walk from Ubin jetty to the beach near Elephant Rock.

We will see Ficus Stricta, a rare, critically endangered strangler fig tree on a granite outcrop along a cliff.

The tree is only found in Changi and Pulau Ubin, and provides food and shelter for animals, including hornbills and koels.

As for Elephant Rock, based on an oral history shared by the headman of Ubin's Malay kampung, there was a legend about three animals - elephant, frog and pig - challenging one another to reach Ubin by noon.

All three failed to do so and were turned into rock isles near the southern coast of Ubin.

Today, parts of the southern coast is strewn with litter and beach debris carried by the sea currents.

So, we will clean up the litter along the beach on our way back to Ubin jetty.

I will share the hiking guidelines to the participants before the day itself.
