This event takes place in Barrhead Foundry
Catherine, or Kate Cranston was known as the Queen of the Glasgow Tearooms, with four successful branches within the city centre. Her art tearooms offered a respectable place for tea and conversation for women, as well as a non-alcoholic luncheon option for men during a time where the Temperance movement was becoming popular.
She traded on her “Miss Cranston” brand, but many people did not know that she was actually married to the Provost of Barrhead – John Cochrane of the Grahamston Foundry – and lived in the town for several years after they first got married.
Find out more about the life of this pioneering lady entrepreneur, who spent many happy years in Barrhead, from Historian Lorraine Murray.
