Alex Brown - A modern colourist, he studied at Camberwell School of Art in London from 1984 to 1987, attaining a degree in Fine Art Painting. His influences are Cezanne, Van Gogh and Matisse. Using brush and palette knife he has developed his style, which is a play between representation and abstraction.
He uses colour to create a form of vibrant reality rather than using detail. His mark making works against forms to question space.
"A painting can be like a poem, the essence of knowledge and feeling. For me, colour is a subject in itself, rather than a specific of a place and time"
Alex will start the Plein Air session with a short demo in oil colour, demonstrating how to begin your painting and how to mix the colours to make distance. Just before lunch Alex will do a further 15 minutes demo to mature the painting. An hour before the end Alex will show how to put the finishing touches.
If anyone wants to choose their own landscape or do their own thing, Alex will be there to support you and will be going around to help everyone during the day.
