July is Disability Pride Month, a celebration of the creativity, resilience, and achievements of disabled people, and an opportunity to come together for like minded and important conversations.
Heysham Library will be having a Disability Pride Month art exhibit from 22nd July to mid August, and this creative workshop is a chance to get involved! All local disabled folks are welcome to join, whether you help create displays and decorations, add to our community collage mural or add your flower to our papercraft garden, make your own piece to exhibit, or simply come and hang out and do your own thing.
We're taking over the whole library for this workshop! We'll be providing a range of creative materials, as well as plenty of snacks and drinks. Pop in for however long you feel, and you're very welcome to bring a mate or carer. In the meeting room will be a quieter space focused on independent creating, with interactive art and chat in the main library. Plus, our library is fully mobility aid accessible with 2 disabled toilets.
(The meeting room workshop won't be family friendly as we intend for a relaxed and quieter space, so ages 14+ there please.)
If you'd like to submit art for the exhibit outside of the workshop, please DM or email the Friends to organise drop-off at the library. The theme of our exhibit is a relaxed theme of "Beyond the Labels" which can be interpreted however you like. Any creativity we do is beyond the labels some would give us, so we're basically anything is welcome to show off the diverse creativity of our local community.
Please share, and hope to see you there!
