It feels like AI is everywhere right now, it’s certainly one of the latest buzzwords in the news, but do we really understand what it is, or how it differs from traditional technology? In this lively and accessible talk by Dr. Donna Carroll, we will explore the many, often- overlooked ways that AI is already shaping our daily lives. You’ll discover some of the latest fun (and free) tools you can even try yourself and take a look at some of the more serious ways AI is transforming fields like medicine, technology, warfare and education. We’ll also go on to reflect on the ethical dilemmas that come with this powerful technology. Whether you’re cautious, critical or curious about this quickly evolving field, this talk will help you make sense of the AI hype and understand why the future of AI depends not just on what it can do, but on what we choose to do with it.

Donna has worked as a physics lecturer in the UK and the Netherlands, and is now responsible for professional development at Maastricht University. Here she delivers workshops to help staff improve the student learning experience, including sessions addressing the challenges of AI in education. Donna is greatly passionate about broadening public interest and understanding of science and technology, often by revealing the surprising science in everyday life and uncovering how modern devices actually work. Outside of work, Donna is a qualified watchmaker and service technician. She enjoys building quirky electronics projects, volunteering at a Repair Café and learning cool tricks at the local trampoline park.

You may remember Donna from her last talk with her outstanding rhetorical skills and her lively and enthusiastic presentation. So, we are more than delighted to welcome her again!
