In the Irish village of Leenane, gravedigger Mick Dowd and his young assistant Mairton are tasked with exhuming old remains to make space for new burials. Amongst the those due to be disinterred this year are the remains of Mick's late wife. Mick knows that it's not only her remains will be brought back to the surface, but the vicious gossip that Mick murdered her...
The play explores themes of death, grief, suspicion, and the absurdist dark humour characteristic of McDonagh's work.
