This Sunday, 29th June, being a Fifth Sunday in the month means that members of the Anglican Parishes of Beverley-Brookton, Northam, Quairading, and York gather for a Combined Service. This Sunday it will be a service commencing at 10.00 a.m. at Holy Trinity Church, York and at which the congregation will celebrate the Festival of The Coming of the Light.
This Festival which is distinctly Australian, celebrated on the 1st July each year, marks the arrival of Christianity to the Torres Straits when in 1871 the London Missionary Society missionaries landed on Erub Isalnd, bringing the Christian faith with the support of local leaders. This event is seen as a turning point in Torres Strait history, blending spiritual traditions and shaping cultural identity. The day is celebrated in the Torres Strait Islands with church services, hymn singing, feasts, traditional dancing, and community gatherings, honoring both faith and the enduring strength of Torres Strait Islander culture.
The 1st July a public holiday across all Torres Strait Islands Regional Council divisions and offices.
