'Eden' exhibition by Eileen MacArthur

July 5 - September 7, 2025

‘Eden’ is a series of works from 2021-2025 that explore the intersection of nature and the human condition. This series of oil paintings originated with the largest work, “It’s only a box at the edges’, which depicts the illusory nature of freedom. The titles of the paintings reference various aspects of human-ness represented allegorically by images of trees, flowers and gardens. Human relationships are depicted as flowers close together or falling away from one another; tree limbs seek connection as intimate partners in a shared space.

The works facilitate a kind of anthropomorphism, as human tendencies are transposed onto images of nature in order to observe the interplay between the individual and the broader environment. Elements of the natural world are perceived not in isolation, but instead within the context of their broader community. Flowers and trees are a means of discussing not only the individual, but also refer to the nuances of the social context of groups within society.

Admission to the gallery is free.
