About the book: Julie Otsuka's The Buddha in the Attic tells the poignant story of Japanese "picture brides" who immigrated to the United States in the early 1900s. These women embarked on arduous journeys to San Francisco, arriving to arranged marriages with men they'd never met—often decades older. Drawing from real letters and interviews, the novel captures their challenging first nights as wives and the enduring spirit of what it means to be human in the face of immense change.
