Sketching with Oils Workshop

Treat yourself to spend two days immersed in oil paint! If you’ve always wanted to start oil painting but never had the chance, or if you thought oil painting might be too difficult to try, allow Klaire Lockheart to peer-pressure you into painting with her. All the cool kids are doing it! Take this opportunity to follow along with Klaire step-by-step as she guides you through a practice sketch of a simple figure painting. She’ll demonstrate the process she used when she planned the paintings she created for the Pollock-Krasner Foundation. With guidance, you’ll tone a canvas, mix paint, and match colors while developing safe studio habits. You’ll practice a general-to-specific painting technique, which is perfect for creating successful sketches that are reminiscent of Impressionist style art. With additional one-on-one attention, you’ll use your skills to create an original oil sketch based on a photograph you bring to the workshop.

Klaire Lockheart is teaching at the 26th Annual Arts Education Institute at Northern State University in Aberdeen, South Dakota July 14-17, 2025.
