Adult Class: "First Light"

“First Light: Jesus and the Kingdom of God” – New Adult Class Begins July 6
For twelve consecutive Sundays (July 6 – September 21) we’ll gather in Gabrielson Chapel for the video-based series “First Light: Jesus and the Kingdom of God.” “First Light,” has long been one of my favorite adult Bible studies. The course is an examination of the historical/socio/political world in which Jesus lived and what his ministry was really meant to be in that context. It strips away some of the ways we have traditionally “softened” Jesus and his message, exposes how risky it really was, and most importantly, shows how we can live boldly as Christians in the 21st century.
The course is based on videos featuring the highly esteemed biblical scholars John Dominic Crossan and the late Marcus Borg. These two giants in the field used to lead groups of tourists through the Holy Land and would give lectures about the life and ministry of Jesus in the very locales in which Jesus lived and worked. The videos that we’ll be showing are highlights from those talks.
Because these two scholars typically dive right in to the deep end of biblical study and theological language, we’ll start each session with a bit of vocabulary and geography so we’re all on the same page. We can always pause the video to clarify any points they may be making.
There are really helpful background readings that are available from Heather in the office for anyone who wants them, and I’ll bring study questions to each session. I think you’ll find it illuminating and exciting. I love this class and I love leading it, and I truly hope that you’ll join me starting July 6.
