Dark Skies & Night Wings: Stargazing and Moth Discovery

Celebrate the beauty of the night with Seven Islands State Birding Park during Dark Skies & Night Wings, a special evening program in honor of the New Moon and National Moth Week! With no moonlight to compete, it’s the perfect opportunity to look up and see a sky full of stars—and look closer to discover the incredible diversity of moths that flutter just beyond our daytime view.

We'll begin with a short talk in the Bluebird Barn classroom about moths, their importance in the ecosystem, and how you can observe them at home. Then we’ll head outside to set up lights and attract moths, while also looking up to explore constellations and the wonders of the night sky. We’ll provide moth field guides and ID sheets to help with observations.

This program is suitable for ages 8 and up. Participants should meet at the Bluebird Barn by 8:30 PM. Bring a flashlight or headlamp (red light preferred), water, and dress appropriately for warm weather and light hiking. Please do not use insect repellent if you plan to help catch and handle moths. A camp chair or blanket is also recommended.

The cost of this program is $15 for adults and $8 for kids under 12.
