Elan Valley - Rhayader

Such was the size of the project of building the Elan Valley dams, that a railway needed to be laid just to carry materials, and a whole village was built to house the workers and their families. The village still stands, close to the visitor centre, and the railway now forms the basis for the Elan Valley Trail.

This route uses the car park for the Trail as a starting point but takes an altogether more strenuous overview of the area and its huge reservoirs by weaving a sinuous thread through the lofty whaleback hills that tower over the waterways.

Meeting at the car park we will aim for a 10am start, You will need to bring clothing suitable for the day, snacks and plenty of water as required and your bike should be in good condition and safe to ride. E-bikes and analogue bikes are welcome but a helmet is a must, no helmet no ride!

Distance: 45km
Total Ascent: 1140 meters
Ride Time: 4 - 6 hours
Grade: Red+
