Ceramic Surface Design Series
Project: Underglaze Painting & Sgraffito
Friday, July 25th from Noon-4pm
Instructor: Julie McCarty
Learn the basics of decorating your ceramic works with colorful underglazes and stroke&coats as well as practice your hand at the sgraffito technique! Sgraffito is a popular potter's technique that means "to scratch" and is a method of creating different patterns, designs, and textures by "scratching" away a layer of clay to expose a different surface layer!
Students will make slab coasters/tiles at the beginning of class to try out underglaze and carving techniques.
**Feel free to bring pre-made pottery that is still workable (not leather-hard or bone dry) if you would like to use that as your tool for learning and exploration. HOWEVER, surfaces of pottery should have large flat areas on which to work.
