Our August meeting is on Saturday 9th and this month, we are delighted to welcome Ian Woolnough who will be speaking on "Mexico Autumn 2014 - The Search For Ariocarpus In Flower."

After discovering Ariocarpus in mainland northeast Mexico in 2014 while photographing Thelocacti, Ian returned that autumn to hopefully see the Ariocarpus in flower. His talk showcases not just Ariocarpus, but other fascinating plants, wildlife, and scenery.

Ian's passion for cacti began in his teens, briefly interrupted by studies in Geology and Cartography, leading to a job in Fiji. Returning to England, he immersed himself in the hobby, taking on various roles in the BCSS and becoming Chairman of the King's Lynn branch. His photos have appeared in BCSS calendars, cactus books, and journals like CactusWorld.

Since 2002, he has delivered over 250 talks at BCSS branches and conventions, including overseas. He’s attended ELK annually since 1998 (except during COVID) and joined the UK committee in 2020, the same year he became a Mammillaria Society committee member, and a qualified BCSS cactus judge.

With over two years spent observing plants in habitat across 28 trips, Ian is now voluntarily retired in Norfolk, growing and propagating cacti on a larger scale than ever before at the former Eau Brink Cactus Nursery.
