Piano Richard Tanner
New Music Room,
Wednesday 25 June 2025, 13:30
Rugby School’s Music Graduate Teaching Assistant Rosanna Milner performs a solo vocal recital, joined by Rugby School’s Director of Music Richard Tanner on the piano. This enchanting performance delves into Shakespeare’s profound exploration of love and femininity through song.
The centrepiece of the programme is Cecilia McDowall's Four Shakespeare Songs which reinterpret Shakespeare's women through four different styles and genres.
The characters McDowall chooses to portray in this cycle — Cleopatra, Ophelia, and Titania — inspire the rest of the programme, with music from a variety of composers through the ages, and texts by Shakespeare and beyond.
Programme:
Cecilia McDowall, Four Shakespeare Songs Samuel Coleridge-Taylor, The Willow Song
George Frideric Handel, Piangerò la sorte mia (from Giulio Cesare)
Franz Schubert, An Sylvia
Hector Berlioz, La mort d’Ophélie
