The Apostle Islands are referred to as the Crown Jewels of Wisconsin because of their spectacular scenery and geology. This stunning landscape has been created by the action of glaciers, rivers, and most dramatically by the erosive forces of Lake Superior. This slideshow discussion will explore the factors that have influenced the spectacular coastal landforms, such as sea caves and arches, that the Islands are famous for.

Tom Fitz has been studying and teaching about the geology of the Lake Superior Region for decades – first as a graduate student at UMD, then as a Professor of Geology at Northland College in Ashland, WI, and now as an Academic Advisor and Adjunct Professor at UMD. His expertise is in earth materials, geologic history, and our relationship with the Earth. Tom has earned numerous teaching awards through the years and thoroughly enjoys teaching, learning, and leading field trips through the amazing geology of the Lake Superior Region.
