From its early artistic roots to its present-day global influence, this lecture tells the captivating story of manga. We will trace the origins of the word manga to Japanese artists Santo Kyoden and Katsushika Hokusai, whose popular Hokusai Manga sketchbooks played a significant role in the term’s early usage. The lecture will also explore how Western comics played a pivotal role in manga's evolution, inspiring Japanese cartoonists and sparking the development of a distinct style of manga.

Becky Reece is a Reference and Instruction Librarian at College of DuPage. She holds a BS in History from Illinois State University and a MS in Library and Information Science from Chicago State University. Becky’s research focuses on the integration of graphic novels, manga, and comics into higher education. Her book chapter, "If you build it, they will come: A case for manga in the academic library," is published in The Community College Library: Collections and Technical Services (Association of College and Research Libraries, 2025).
