Regnskogfondet/Skeiv Verden welcomes to the screening of Uyra- The Rising Forest

Uyra is a trans-indigenous artist travelling through the Amazon forest on a journey of self-discovery using performance art and ancestral messages to teach youth and confront structural racism and transphobia in Brasil.

We follow the non-binary ecologist and artist Emerson on a journey through the lush Amazon rainforest and its equally rich history. Uýra is Emerson’s artistic alter ego, a mythological figure who uses centuries of abuse against Indigenous people, queer communities, and nature as the foundation for their shamanistic performance art. The project fuses art, ecology, drag culture, and LGBTQI activism in a way that both reveals compelling historical connections and results in beautiful, symbol-laden performances.

Central to Emerson and Uýra’s work are the close—though not always obvious—links between the oppression of minority groups and the exploitation of the environment. Uýra gives voice to the marginalized by bringing forth ancient traditions that celebrate diversity and honor nature’s complexity. UÝRA: THE RISING FOREST offers a unique perspective on some of the most urgent issues of our time, and it is an aesthetic experience you won’t soon forget.
