July walk: Otway Ridge waterfalls + Redwoods forest
Advertisement
The annual Otways Ridge waterfalls and Redwood forest meander, plus a cold dip in the Aire River.
Location:
The waterfalls are located near Beech Forest, which is an approx one hour and 40-minute drive from Torquay, and each waterfall is a short drive from the other.
Distance:
This one is less of a big hike and more of a day spent admiring the Otways in all their Winter glory by visiting the three main waterfalls near Beech Forest and the Redwoods Forest. In total, it's approx 5 kms of walking, with steps in some sections. Refer to the images shared in the discussion section for details of the length of the 3 walks.
Difficulty level:
Medium
Meeting point:
We'll meet at Triplet Falls and then visit Beauchamp Falls and Hopetoun Falls and finish our day at the Redwoods Forest.
Highlights:
I might be a bit biased, but this is the crown jewel of the Otways! We'll wander through fern-filled, cool-temperate rainforests with ancient Beech myrtle trees that are adorned with epiphytes, fungi and moss. This landscape of a lush and spectacular ecosystem.
Additional info:
The weather can be unpredictable at this time of year, but that rainy weather makes the forest and the falls look spectacular, so it's worth donning a good rain jacket and making a day of it—and perhaps pack an extra jacket and change of clothes.
As always, we'll be setting a slow and steady pace, with plenty of time to stop and enjoy nature—I hope to see you in the forest 💚
