Bron Y Garth is an old Victorian Hospital, mortuary and workhouse that is set in the beautiful Welsh countryside. The conditions in the hospital were extreme with the harshest of conditions and it was the poor and impoverished that were brought to the hospital to endured these despicable conditions.
Bron Y Garth Hospital, also known as Ffestiniog Union Workhouse, was originally built by the Victorians in 1839 to house the poor and still shows evidence of how life was for them lying in the hospital wing showing original features which include examples of punishment techniques.
It continued to be used until 1948 when it was later developed as a National Health Service Hospital. The hospital eventually closed its doors completely in 2009.
On site there is also a cottage which was thought to house those with infectious diseases.
The mortuary still has its viewing window and evidence of fragments of the identity tickets placed on a deceased patient’s foot.
