Pinyon Jay Nesting Colony Field Trip

Join GBBO biologist, Kelly Colegrove on this field trip to visit Pinyon Jay nesting colony sites. At this time of year, the jays are finished with nesting efforts, and it is safe to visit these areas without disturbing them. On this trip, we will visit two colony sites in close proximity to see nesting habitat and try to locate more nests.

The details of colony sites are a critical aspect of Pinyon Jay conservation and there are still major knowledge gaps. Researchers have questions about microhabitats, nest spacing, site selection, and more. This is an opportunity to connect with GBBO, learn about Pinyon Jay nesting biology, help fill some of these knowledge gaps, and get some more data into the database!

We will meet at the Pinyon Trailhead in Gardnerville at 8:00 AM, this is located on an improved dirt road about 7 miles east of Gardnerville.

Please note that both colony locations require a 1.5km (1 mile) walk with some elevation gain.
