David Gans and the Broken Angels

A very special Deadville at The Bitter End in June welcomes back David Gans and The Broken Angels to our hallowed stage on Tuesday June 24 at 8:30.

David Gans and the Broken Angels is a band with ever-changing personnel that dates back to 1997. "DJ Dark Star Dan invited me to join him in a weekly event for Deadheads at Blake's in Berkeley – a set of live music followed by a DJ performance," Gans recalls. "With so many skilled and inspired musicians who love to play this music, I thought it would be fun to put together a new combination of players each week."

The weekly gig lasted through most of 1997 and led to performances in other venues. Guests included Vince Welnick, Bob Bralove, Henry Kaiser, and other luminaries. Grateful Dead bassist Phil Lesh joined the Broken Angels for a few benefit shows in the fall and winter of 1997-1998, after which he started doing a similar thing on a national scale as Phil Lesh and Friends.

The current incarnation of David Gans and the Broken Angels is an especially pleasant one for Gans: the bassist is his niece, Caitlin Oliver-Gans, who performs regularly in New York with Dark Streets and also works with the Silos. Keyboardist Matthew Iselin plays accordion in Dark Streets and is also the keyboardist for Half Step, a prominent Grateful Dead tribute band. Rounding out the lineup is drummer Jason Isaac, who also plays with Dark Streets.

Last time the group performed it was almost sold out. Let’s bring the love this time and pack the place!!!
