An Evening of Piano Improvisation and Original Compositions
Friday 4th July, 7.30pm – Studio Performance
Join us for a very special evening of solo piano with two distinctive voices in contemporary music.
Paul Taylor is one of the most original and quietly adventurous pianists in the North of England. Known for his richly layered, harmonically daring improvisations, Paul creates music that’s fluid, spacious and deeply evocative – often sitting somewhere between the worlds of jazz and modern classical music, while belonging fully to neither. His solo performances are immersive, surprising and full of emotional depth.
Described by International Piano Magazine as “a rare phenomenon” and by Jazz North East as “a solo improviser of outstanding scope and originality”, Paul has performed in remarkable settings from Durham Castle to the Victoria Tunnel, with his performances regularly drawing comparisons to the lyricism of Romantic-era composers and the free spirit of jazz.

He’ll be joined by composer and pianist Steve Luck, whose own music explores gentle, introspective moods through intimate piano miniatures. Steve’s felted piano pieces have been streamed over 3 million times, and his music has featured widely on film, television and radio. His solo sets are delicate, melodic and atmospheric – drawing listeners into a world of quiet intensity.
This is an informal and intimate studio performance – a chance to hear two very different but complementary approaches to the piano, side by side.
Expect new work, improvisation, and an evening full of spontaneity and stillness, connection and contrast.
