The Pennsylvania Rural Arts Alliance and the Artists Hand Gallery invite regional artists to apply to be part of the Sounds of the Region exhibition. This interdisciplinary show explores the intersection of music, sound, and material culture in the folk traditions of rural Western Pennsylvania. From handcrafted string instruments to woven textiles inspired by Appalachian melodies, the exhibition will showcase work that reflects the sonic heritage of the region, both traditional and contemporary. Artists working in mediums such as instrument making, sound-producing objects, and sound-inspired visual art are encouraged to apply. A panel of folklorists, artists, and musicians will jury submissions to ensure a thoughtful representation of regional artistry.
This exhibition is part of a larger project featuring community programming, including bluegrass jams, instrument-making workshops, textile demonstrations, and folk song storytelling—all celebrating sound as a living and evolving tradition.
The exhibit will open with a reception on Friday Sept. 12, 2025 and will close on Saturday September 27, 2025.
