Step back in time and experience the art of traditional blacksmithing! Join historical demonstrator Kevin Thompson for a hands-on introduction to this centuries-old craft. In this immersive class, students will learn foundational blacksmithing techniques and create simple yet functional items like S-hooks and wall hooks.
What You’ll Learn:

🔨 The five essential blacksmithing techniques:

Drawing out
Tapering
Bending
Scrolling
Twisting

🔥 Additional skills covered:

Blacksmith shop safety
Basic finishing techniques
The history and significance of blacksmithing
How to build, maintain, and use a coal fire
Types of fuel and materials used in blacksmithing

Class Details:

📅 Duration: 6 hours (9:00 AM–12:00 PM & 1:00 PM–5:00 PM)
🥪 Lunch Break: 12:00 PM–1:00 PM (Explore the site during the break; bring your own lunch)
💲 Cost: $130 per student
👨‍🏭 Class Size: 4–6 students (small group for personalized instruction)
📌 Registration Deadline: One week before the class date (unless approved by Hagood Mill staff and instructor)
What to Bring:

✅ Safety glasses
✅ Closed-toe shoes, long pants, and a long-sleeved shirt
✅ Water bottle
Important Notes:

Students under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. The adult does not need to be a paying student but must remain outside the smithy.
Students should arrive by 8:45 AM to sign a liability waiver.
