Gilpin Lake Trail - Zirkle Wilderness

This is MY all time favorite local hike. 9.1 miles with 1994 ft elevation gain. Out and back. Dress in layers, bring sunscreen, bug spray, water and snacks. I like to pack my hammock to because it is DIVINE to hang out at the lake.
The TH is about an hour from town! So yes - this is an early departure, but you will thank yourself for going. NEVER disappoints. Never.
Directions from Steamboat: Take HWY 40 west of town and turn right on to Cnty Rd 129. Travel north about 18 miles to the Seedhouse Road (Forest Road 400, also Cnty Rd 64) and turn right. Continue for about 10 miles to parking (make sure to have your maps downloaded because there is no service once you get to the TH). There are bathrooms at the TH. I will be wearing a lei so you know who to look for!
