The Hikurangi subduction zone is potentially the largest source of earthquake and tsunami hazard in New Zealand.

In this one hour community workshop, hear from one of New Zealand's top geohazard scientists about what the Hikurangi subduction zone is, our risk, likely impacts, and the difference between tsunami and other hazards.

Helen Jack has spent more than 20 years researching earthquake and tsunami hazards in Canterbury and knows the risks, warning signs and what to do to prepare for a major event.

The 'Hikurangi: Let's Not Be Surprised' series has been developed in partnership with University of Canterbury, Environment Canterbury and Emergency Management Canterbury to build awareness and resilience in our emergency systems through considering the reality of our tsunami risk.

There will be time for Q&As following Helen's presentation.
