Acrylic painting
Gabriel Romo is a painter who negotiates balance between the spiritual and physical worlds, conceptualizing the pre-Hispanic and various other indigenous traditions of his Raramuri (Tarahumara) lineage. He translates the energy he feels from the non-physical space of inspiration into the physical world via image-making. In this way, he captures traces of the primitive memories that bridge the past to the present.
Romo’s creations are a labyrinth of shapes and colors that reflect our unity with the cosmos and are grounded in healing aesthetics and the seductive desire for beauty. The imagery awakens dormant memories through its subliminal context and asks the viewer to remember serenity, love, joy and wonder. Integrating his own artistic expression with traditional imagery of America’s history, he explores the untold relationships between hermetic wisdom and the history of indigenous cultures.
