Late Summer Wildflower Series

Summer provides a bounty of wildflowers for us to enjoy. Each flower blooms in its own season and depends on native insects for pollination. Each month we'll take a leisurely walk, identifying wildflowers and learning a bit of folklore and ethnobotany. Early summer we might see trillium, trout lily, and columbine in flower. As we get into late July, we should find cardinal flower by the water, milkweed in the fields, and wintergreen and Canada mayflower in the forest, as well as dogwood, spicebush, and sweet pepperbush. Late August provides lots of color, with the many different species of goldenrod and aster. Along with looking at the flowers, we will discuss climate change and its effects on our wildflowers.
This 3-part series meets on three Wednesdays - June 25, July 30, and August 27.
