Let's Make Mead

Honey, yeast, water and time. Combining these simple ingredients makes mead, an alcoholic fermented beverage that dates back millennia – from ancient China, Egypt, and Rome to the Norse culture of Scandinavia and beyond. Do you want to tap into this legacy and learn how to make mead yourself? Join us for this two-hour introduction designed to take the mystery out of mead making with sparkling results!
Led by Mike Mackiewicz of BoneLake Meadows Apiary, the class will discuss the history of mead, different varieties, flavors, and world/ regional differences in mead brewing. We’ll have several kinds of mead to taste, and then move into hands-on demonstration and mead preparation.
For those who bring their own equipment or the recommended kit, you will go home with a one-gallon batch of mead prepped and ready to ferment. There will be honey from the WEI hives available for purchase on the day of class for $20/quart (one quart needed for a batch). You’re also welcome to join the class without equipment just to learn the process – in this case you will not go home with mead, but you’ll have the knowledge to start your own batch. Handouts will be provided that include all equipment and ingredients, definitions of what the components are and what they do, and mead-making instructions.
